Don't ask - I just didn't feel like using chemical after chemical. There are the classics: oatmeal facials and sugar scrubs. I've even heard of using either raw egg or even beer to clean out those locks. But here are some masks and facial ideas from the article. Note: these are not my ideas. Just spreading the word:

"Deep Cleansing Masks – Clay or mud based masks are great for oily or combination skin types. These masks purify and deep cleanse, bring impurities to the surface and help to firm up the skin.

To Make a Mud Mask - Combine equal parts of cosmetic clay (available at your local natural food store) and water (or bottled spring water for more minerals), adding a drop of your favourite essential oil before mixing. Mix until it becomes a paste. Apply as needed, leaving on for 10 minutes. Rinse off and pat face dry.

Fruit Masks – These are great for all skin types. Fruit and its extracts are full of AHAs (especially papaya and apple), which when applied help exfoliate the skin and enhance water absorption which softens the skin. Aromatherapy (Bloomsbury Publishing, 1997, $19.95) by Chrissie Wildwood suggests some great, easy-to-make fruit masks to try at home!

To Make A Papaya Facial – Mash up a fresh papaya and sieve into a bowl. Pat onto clean skin, leaving on for 10-15 minutes and then rinse with warm water, followed by cold water to close pores. Great for all skin types.

To Make An Apple Facial – Rub a slice of raw apple onto face after cleansing and leave for 10-15 minutes. Rinse with warm and then cold water. Great for normal to oily skin types.

Banana Supreme Facial – Nancy Simpson, Spa Director at Ste. Anne’s Country Inn & Spa in Grafton, ON, recommends an all-natural facial for dry skin that is both nourishing and moisturizing. Mash bananas until paste like, add honey if desired (which will nourish skin) and smooth over skin. Let sit for 10 minutes and rinse with cool water.

Source: click here

If you ever actually try any of the above (which I'm dying to know whether or not they work) - e-mail me with your experience. It has such a pretty yet sarcastic theme to it that I felt it was very much blog-worthy.

---

And another one: introduced by my French teacher, who was attempting to rack up some Valentine's Day spirit on Friday. (Sorry if you can't speak French. The super cheesy yet classic lyrics are here)

Edith Piaf - La Vie En Rose

"La Vie En Rose" is a French saying, similar to the English saying "Cloud Nine". The song itself, I found (even though I'm not a big foreign music fan) was uplifting and got stuck in my head. It is quite well-known, so it's good to know what it is.

Listen to it on Youtube.

There was a movie that came out last year with the same name of the song. It was a biography movie of Edith Piaf, the French singer who made the song famous. The actress who played Piaf, Marion Cotillard, won the Academy Award for the Best Actress in that film last year.

Piaf, born in 1915, was a beloved singer in France. The movie itself looks great - although I have not seen it yet, I watched the trailer and it seemed very worth watching. She had quite a dramatic life, using her skill of singing to make it out into the real world. She faced problems such as abusive boyfriends, drugs, alcohol, living in the streets, losing friends and her daughter, being accused of murder, almost getting shot by one of her boyfriends, and living in a prostitute house. She died of liver cancer in 1963. Her most famous and notable songs are "La Vie En Rose", "Hymme a l'amour", "Milford", and "Non, je ne regrette rien".

Anyways, that was a little taste of some foreign love songs as well as a cute scornful jazz piece. Get a listen and hopefully download one or another for whatever the reason. Happy Valentine's Day world...hope yours was more full of love than mine. And believe me, I bet everyone's was.One Fashionistahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06274933567934255564noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6957785174651449753.post-79187352658194909882009-02-13T10:42:00.000-08:002009-02-13T11:00:06.820-08:00Children Having Children13-year old Alfie Patten, a brit, is the father of a newborn girl.

Check out the link here.

Not only is he a dad at 13, him and his 15 year old girlfriend have no support whatsoever to support the baby. I could very well skip right into summer and I would love that. February seems, (if it's not only me) that it's prime time of cold and flu season. Brrr. Not only is everyone sick, everyone still decides to spread their germs in public places.

Students continue to drag themselves to school because they can't afford to miss school. Adults can't afford to miss work time so they, too, drag themselves into wherever they need to go to. But the truth is, a person can't get better that way. No wonder why cold and flu season here in Canada supposedly lasts from November-April. Terrible.

A while ago, I came across a study that claimed vitamin C is not a remedy for colds. Nor does it do a significant job in preventing it. I was shocked - I had put my absolute faith in orange juice for every cold I had ever gotten. How did the whole vitamin C thing come up anyway? Now that I think of it I didn't get any better after filling up on buckets of Vitamin C. Don't quote me on the study: I saw it SOMEWHERE. But it raises an interesting question nonetheless: what if all the stuff we believed in really came from an old-wives tale or a myth? How would we ever know that what we grew up to believe was actually not true without educational institutions questioning these traditional policies?

Anyways, as I was saying. It's February blues to the max for me and I must get rid of my cold soon. I'm dragging myself in tomorrow, aren't I? Better get some of that lemon and honey tea. Mom always said vitamin C was the key for fighting them sicknesses. One Fashionistahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06274933567934255564noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6957785174651449753.post-41397588156738515382008-12-28T23:58:00.000-08:002009-02-12T22:10:29.715-08:00Even Fashionistas Take Holidays

Fashionistas and Potentials,

It's that time of year again.

Boxing week in Canada has not gone as good as we have expected it to.

Here in Vancouver, the downtown sales are just good enough to drag people out of their beds and brave the slush to get their hands on a 25% off pea coat or trench for January. But not enough to allow them a few hours to dig through the jeans in hopes of a perfect fit. Who has that kind of time, anyway, when the sale isn't even worth it?

Disappointing, and with all that talk of economic failure you'd think that the stores would muster up some sort of a mind-blowing deal that could save themselves. Once again, consumerism sits outside the store windows just waiting for a cue to come rescue the corporations.

In reality, it's not that bad. Robson Street (see picture) is still lively, as is the Pacific Center. In the suburbs, retailers gather up more courage. Pull open any magazine that showcases the sporty chic... and the high-top clad models will never fail you.

Built for complete convenience, style, comfort (although not exactly ease of wearing), the Converse High Tops will not only continue to represent the original basketball shoe, it will remain as the universal and affordable practical yet cool shoe of the century. The rich and the poor, the rock boys and the prep girls... may no one be left behind.

And today, I salute you, Mr. Chuck Taylor. One Fashionistahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06274933567934255564noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6957785174651449753.post-77232225717919995162008-10-22T18:36:00.000-07:002008-10-23T21:15:55.292-07:00The Buckle, Oh.
This season's boots, like the one shown here on the left (Franco Sarto, $120, townshoes.com) mean to me the ultimate question: buckle or no buckle? The buckle has always been a touchy subject to me. To elaborate, fashion crimes with specific tools (such as the buckle boot) lead me to think uneasy about such articles of "fashion". And unfortunately, said boot has long been a victim. Black pleather buckle boots with the rubber flat sole, no heel. I shudder even thinking back about it. And countless offense after each other, I began to be skeptic.

19 pairs of leather, suede, gum and sheepskin boots later, I can safely tell you I haven't even come close to considering a pair of les bottes avec buckle. Not even close. But designers such as Steve Madden and labels such as Chanel have and are fearlessly incorporating such styles this year and previous seasons. The claim: an accentuation on lovely slim calves, or an demonstration of a simple chic, easily obtained. But I will tell you, fearful fashionistas, that if you can prove me wrong I salute you.

The decision is yours. I happen to be an H&M VIP, I can't get enough of them. The Japanese entrepreneur/designer and founder of a $30 million profiting clothing chain has created many works of art for H&M featuring black and white polka dot ensembles on women who really represent the blonde image of her. Not that the heavy black liner is the same, just the hair. Nevertheless, Kawakubo stated that designing for this fashion giant was "interesting". This new line of must-haves will hit stores a week after its premiere in Japan. Stay true to your own, as they always say.
One Fashionistahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06274933567934255564noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6957785174651449753.post-35233253495815492112008-10-15T23:07:00.000-07:002008-10-15T23:16:31.041-07:00Kudos to InterpretationIt's true - every country's city gals have a unique style, one that shows their nation's origins or role models in fashion. For example, in North America we have a standard for "classy" and "casual" as well as "walk down the street chic" that we subconsciously KNOW. Likewise, in countries such as Japan and Korea, we see the norm reflecting off their fashion influences- mainly here, in the West.

But here's the catch: these evolutionary Oriental nations have interpreted our status quo into something that resembles our attire, but changed it as well. For example, they take our everyday denim and add grunge textures and hobo shapes that are then brought back into America for further refining and voila! production. Inevitably, they have evolved our way of thinking in terms of style and have brought it further. The denim shortalls have become a denim dress and tights affair. Never before has the full bangs look been so now.

With change comes more change and new ideas. What couldn't we love about this?

Kudos to our international sisters for this revolutionary process.

Any questions for style tips and fashion in general, make your mark with a comment. One Fashionistahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06274933567934255564noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6957785174651449753.post-77100275783405101322008-10-15T18:18:00.000-07:002008-10-15T18:21:43.938-07:00Day One - Pea Coats For AllFashionistas and potentials,

Welcome to the inner-city, soulful and most insightful blog you will ever encounter.
